In March 2020, nearly all cultural institutions were forced to close. Suddenly, huge spaces in often prominent locations stood idle. Some clubs were converted into test centers, gallery, storage or rehearsal spaces. Many stood completely still and fell into a deep sleep.

Whether it's a pandemic, economic interests or gentrification, club culture is often not prioritized. How much closure and displacement can the club scene withstand? What remains when these free spaces are taken away?

The HfK student Lena-Lotte Agger reflected this condition artistically as part of her final thesis.

Sleeping Beauties is a photo-documentary journey through 31 clubs in eight cities from 2020 to 2022, showing perspectives from Bremen, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, Munich, Nuremberg, Dresden and Berlin between closure, hope for reopening, conversion and forced break.

Final project with Andrea Rauschenbusch and Peter Bialobrzeski
