Do we really want to destroy media? That's certainly not the point. Without technical aids, from the pencil to the VR cave, no images could be created. However, today’s image technology strives to suppress the diversity of representational possibilities; it standardises styles and motifs. Effects of illusion and immersion can be designed to be near perfection as a result of computer-generated imagery (CGI). However, do we really want to retreat into such illusory worlds?

Opposing tendencies can be seen in art and design today: especially in the field of narrative images‚ from drawing to animation, illustration to comics and cartoons, as well as from augmented to virtual reality (AR/VR). Such visual practices demonstrate a conscious adherence to graphic-drawing imagery or even amateurish craftsmanship, from ballpoint pen doodles to handcrafted figures in stop-motion films.

In addition to going against the technological current, humour is often used as a subversive technique in narrative images. For instance, strategies of irony can resist the illusionistic pressure of media. Irony (eirōneia) means simulating ignorance: an ironic image appears deliberately naïve, yet therein lies the joke. Moreover, to illustrate means ‘to illuminate’ or ‘to enlighten,’ not necessarily as a search for truth but as an act of distortion and exaggeration. Resisting realism proves to be an artistic possibility to brush media ‘against the grain.’

This conference presents lectures, artist talks, performances, exhibitions and zine releases from various academic and artistic disciplines.

Admission is free.
