Fashion Creation as an Embodied Practice: Of Patterns, Bodies and Exhibitions
This lecture by Dra. Karen Van Godtsenhoven (Ghent University) will unpack the themes running through her work as a fashion curator and researcher: from the patterns of Azzedine Alaïa by Thomas Demand, to the influence of the kimono on Western fashions by Madeleine Vionnet and Cristobal Balenciaga, to game-changing approaches to the dressed body by self-taught designers.
She will also talk about the embodied knowledge of postmodern female designers, which is the topic of her current PhD research ("Woman must dress herself") at Ghent University. Looking at some of the concepts ("ma" and abstraction, écriture féminine) underlying several of her exhibitions and publications, this talk and conversation with Prof. Dorothea Mink will explore new avenues for looking at and thinking through fashion as both an embodied and physical practice as well as a discursive, semiotic practice.
