School of Observation
The collaborative practice School of Observation is a multidisciplinary publishing and research practice by Amanda Haas Halim (*1986) and Giacomo Santiago Rogado (*1979). Amanda Haas is a graphic designer, writer, yoga and meditation teacher. Giacomo Santiago Rogado is a visual artist. Each of them has their own working practice. Together they develop and realise books, unique art and design objects or ephemeral interventions in exhibitions, spaces and formats of all kinds.
All processes and project developments are based on mindfulness and regenerative practices and the attempt to live and work as sustainably and gently as possible. This "School" has no fixed teachers and the objects of "Observation" are not clearly defined. The vision of School of Observation is rather to promote a more mindful approach to the environment and one's own inner world through various projects and also through internal growth. These insights and the working practice thus made conscious are then in turn made visible to the outside world and accessible to a broad public. The development of a culture of observation is key. This is why not all School of Observation projects are printed, digital, object or industrial products: Some simply remain ephemeral, such as guided meditations in exhibitions that challenge visitors to have new experiences of space and perception.
School of Observation researches and experiments in the intersection of art, design, literature, science and mindfulness practice. The focus is on process-oriented work, new materialities and at the interfaces with traditional craftsmanship. The development of forward-looking, transdisciplinary projects is a particular strength of the School of Observation. They have been invited to research residencies in the past (Sasso Residency 2014) and also received a nomination for a work contribution in 2015. In 2020, one of their books (G.S.Rogado - Insight) was named one of the Most Beautiful German Books.
