And Still I Rise: Death, Archives and a Feminist Aesthetics of Resistance refers to a poem written by American writer and poet Maya Angelou. The poem is a mantra of laughter, joy, determined resistance and transcendence. How do we create creative forms of resistance and liberation in the face of death? What is the role of care/solidarity/debt that we owe to the living and the dead? Can we reclaim painting as a feminist practice of joy and sensuality that is full of possibilty and where poetic beauty and anarchic humor can confront coercive power? These and similar questions have framed my artistic work for the last twenty years and form the architecture of my talk.

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I rise….
-Maya Angelou
