Joost Rekfeld - Dialogues with Machines
Lecture and Elektronic Improvisation / 22.01.2019
Artist Joost Rekveld investigates what humans can learn from a dialogue with machines and technology. In his work, he explores the sensory consequences of systems of his own design, often inspired by forgotten corners in the history of science and technology. These systems combine temporary dogma’s in the form of procedures or code, with more open-ended elements such as material processes or networks of interactions that are too complex to predict. When simple devices already give unexpected results, it is perhaps more appropriate to think about machines in terms of listening and dialogue instead of control. By engaging in a dialogue with devices and the cultures they are part of, Rekveld wants to open a space of alternative technical possibilities. These are musical, poetic as well as utopian, and form a critique of a purely functional approach to technology.
Part of the lecture will be an "Elektronik Improvisation" together with Chang Park and Robin Hase.
