Sehnsucht nach Sonne, Strand und Meer
Marcia Bittencourt, Michael Arlt, Portinho und Eduardo Penz zelebrierten Bossa nova im HfK-Musikkeller
„Sie sehen, dass sie nichts sehen“, juxt Martin Classen zur Eröffnung der Live-Musik-Reihe „Jazzclub Pro“, die für Gastspiele internationaler Musiker:innen steht und im HfK-Musikkeller an der Dechanatstraße stattfindet.
Der Konzertveranstalter und HfK-Professor für Jazz-Saxofon spielt mit seiner Ansage auf den fehlenden Putz an, also das freigelegte Mauerwerk und die entkleideten Säulen – als einem Ergebnis der zweieinhalbjährigen Renovierung des einst eher tristen Raumes. Jetzt hat er an schickem Underground-Charme gewonnen, das Licht ist schummrig gemütlich wie eh und je.
„Am Mittag saß ich hier noch, da war das die Mensa 13, jetzt ist der Raum locker bestuhlt, erstrahlt in einem ganz anderen Licht und strahlt dabei wirklich eine schöne offene Jazzkeller-Atmosphäre aus. Faszinierend. Und der Sound ist richtig gut. Ich habe vor ungefähr 15 Jahren hier schon mal ein Konzert gegeben, da hat sich viel getan seither. Es macht richtig Spaß, hier zu spielen“, erzählt Michael Arlt in einer Konzertpause.
Seine Gitarrensounds sind auf mittlerweile mehr als 40 CDs von Jazz über Latin bis Pop zu hören. Seit 2001 arbeitet Arlt als Dozent für Jazzgitarre und Harmonielehre an der Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. In Bremen tritt er mit dem Agora-Projekt auf. Neben ihm stehen auf der Bühne ausschließlich Brasilianer:innen: die in Bremen wohnende Sängerin Marcia Bittencourt, der in New York lebende Schlagzeuger Portinho und der in der Schweiz beheimatete Bassist Eduardo Penz. Musiker:innen, die an der HfK auch Workshops geben.
Auf ihrer Setlist notiert sind frisch arrangierte Klassiker des Bossa nova und Eigenkompositionen in diesem Stil, einer harmonisch komplexen, rhythmisch reichen, auf Samba basierenden Musik, die der Poet Olavo Bilac einmal als Liebesfrucht der Begegnung von dreierlei Trauer bezeichnet hat: der Trauer der Portugiesen fern ihrer Heimat, der verschleppten und versklavten Afrikaner sowie der Indios, die den kolonialen Genozid überlebt haben, aber ihres Landes beraubt waren.
Das Agora-Projekt gibt es seit sieben Jahren. Nach der aktuell zehntägigen Europa-Tournee wollen die Musiker:innen in einem Osnabrücker Tonstudio die Aufnahmen für eine CD starten. Bittencourts Texte sehnen sich nach Sonne, Strand und Meer. Die Kollegen spielen handwerklich perfekt, ihre Live-Darbietung kommt in Fahrt, als Pianist Klaus Müller, lehrt an der Uni Oldenburg, dazustößt.
Auch Marcia Bittencourt ist von der Lokalität begeistert: „Einfach ein schönes Ambiente hier, der Jazzclub passt perfekt für uns, auch wenn wir gar keinen Jazz, sondern eben den viel melodischeren Bossa nova spielen. Das bunt gemixte Publikum aus alten und neuen Jazzfans und Studierenden erlebe ich als sehr aufmerksam.“

Weiter geht’s im Musikkeller jeden Dienstag mit dem Oli Poppes „Jazzclub“, die Konzertdaten stehen hier.
Am 28. April 2022, ab 21.30 Uhr, findet im Musikkeller die erste Veranstaltung der Reihe „Resonanzen“ statt: Lehrende des Fachbereichs Musik gestalten ein Konzert.
Erstmals gibt es im Musikkeller am 29. April 2022, ab 21.30 Uhr, eine „Late Night Jam Session“ mit der HfK-Cole-Porter-Tribute-Band.
Zur „Jazzahead-Clubnight“ spielen am 30. April 2022, ab 21 Uhr, das Magnus Bodzin Quartett und das Christopher Olesch Quartett.

"You see that you see nothing," joked Martin Classen at the opening of the live music series Jazzclub Pro, which stands for guest performances by international musicians and takes place in the HfK Musikkeller in the Dechanatstraße. The concert organizer and HfK professor of jazz saxophone alludes with his announcement to the missing plaster, meaning the exposed brickwork and stripped columns A result of the two-and-a-half-year renovation of the once rather dreary space. Now it's gained chic and underground charm, the lighting is however cozy as ever.
"At lunchtime I was still sitting here when this was Mensa 13, now the room is loosely seated, shines in a completely different light, and at the same time really radiates a nice open jazz cellar atmosphere. Fascinating. And the sound is really good. I gave a concert here about 15 years ago, and a lot has happened since then. It's really fun to play here," said Michael Arlt during a break in the concert.
His guitar sounds can now be heard on more than 40 CDs, ranging from jazz to Latin to pop. Since 2001, Arlt has been working as a lecturer for jazz guitar and harmony at the University of Music in Würzburg. In Bremen he performs with the Agora project. He is joined on stage exclusively by Brazilians: Bremen-based singer Marcia Bittencourt, New York-based drummer Portinho and Swiss-based bassist Eduardo Penz. Musicians, who also give workshops at the HfK. Noted on their setlist are freshly arranged bossa nova classics and original compositions in this style, a harmonically complex, rhythmically rich, samba-based music that poet Olavo Bilac once described as the love fruit of the meeting of three kinds of grief: the grief of the Portuguese far from their homeland, of the displaced and enslaved Africans, and of the Indians who survived the colonial genocide but were deprived of their land.
The Agora project has been in existence for seven years. After the current ten-day European tour, the musicians want to start recording a CD in an Osnabrück recording studio. Bittencourt's lyrics yearn for sun, beach and sea. The colleagues play perfectly, their live performance gets going when pianist Klaus Müller, who teaches at the University of Oldenburg, joins them.
Marcia Bittencourt is also enthusiastic about the location: "Simply a beautiful ambience here, the jazz club is perfect for us, even though we don't play jazz at all, but the much more melodic bossa nova. I experience the colorfully mixed audience of old and new jazz fans and students as very attentive."

On April 28, 2022, starting at 9:30 p.m., the Musikkeller will host the first event in the Resonanzen series: Faculty members of the Department of Music will create a concert.
For the first time, there will be a Late Night Jam Session with the HfK Cole Porter Tribute Band in the Musikkeller on April 29, 2022, starting at 9:30 pm.
The Jazzahead Club Night will feature the Magnus Bodzin Quartet and the Christopher Olesch Quartet on April 30, 2022, starting at 9 p.m.
