Brigitta Muntendorf (Komponistin und Professorin HfMT Köln, Gründerin von Ensemble Garage)

The German-Austrian composer Brigitta Muntendorf has internalized referentiality as a compositional principle in her music (music to kin) and creates a multi-layered web of analog-digital modes of expression in her works. Her settings range from instrumental, choral, and orchestral music to transdigital music/dance theater and 3D sound/AR installations.

She established the concept of social composing, appeals to media sensuality and collaborative forms of production in the form of a community of practice.

With ARCHIPEL (Ruhrtriennale 2020>Theater der Welt / Tanz im August 2021), Muntendorf recently presented a new music-dance theater for Ensemble Garage, Asasello Quartett, Norwegian Soloists‘ Choir, MOUVOIR, 3D-Sound and electronics in a further collaboration with choreographer Stephanie Thiersch ((Batailles d’Image/Theater de Nimes, Opera Bonn, City Dance Cologne) and Japanese star architect Sou Fujimoto. During the pandemic, she also created the audiovisual installation COVERED CULTURE (Muntendorf/Lobeck) for 60 singers and performers, which was presented at Duolun Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai), TPAM/BANKArtTemporary (Yokohama), LOOP Alt Space (Seoul) or Kyoto Experiment, among others. In addition, she staged the 32-channel choral composition ||: Forest of Breath :|| on the entire wall of the Kunsthalle Mannheim as part of the International Schiller Days of the National Theatre Mannheim. She is currently working on a new music theater show for Ensemble Modern/Bregenz Festival 2022.

Her Trilogy for Two Pianos and live electronics (GrauSchumacher Piano Duo) is considered a pioneering composition, as is her Public Privacy series, which explores the interaction of music and sharing platforms. Her transdigital music theater productions such as iScreen, YouScream!, FIGO or Ballet for Eleven were premiered at the Eclat Festival, the Munich Biennale or the Donaueschinger Musiktage.

In addition to numerous prizes and artist scholarships (most recently Villa Kamogawa, Japan), she has been awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s Young Composer’s Prize and the German Young Music Authors Award of GEMA. Her works are performed by numerous ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern, Mocrep Chicago, Musikfabrik or Les Siècles at festivals worldwide, such as Festival d’Automne Paris, Ruhrtriennale, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Warsaw Autumn, Munich Biennale, Musica Strasbourg, ULTIMA Oslo, Art Share L.A., ONASSIS Athens, Metro Club Kyoto, TPAM-Festival or Kyoto Experiment.

Brigitta Muntendorf is the founder of Ensemble Garage, artistic director of the FMN Festival (FRAU MUSICA NOVA) and curates the music performances for the Next Level Festival for Games. She is a regular member of juries for the selection of composers for scholarships and prizes, such as for Villa Massimo, Casa Baldi, Deutsches Studienzentrum in Venice or Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, IMPULS Neue Musik or Akademie Musiktheater heute. Since 2018 she is also professor for composition at the HfMT Cologne and director of the Institute for Contemporary Music.
