Artist’s talk by Stelios Kallinikou, in conversation w/ Marina Christodoulidou
Stelios Kallinikou’s practice projects an interest in the act of gazing as an embodied experience that shapes the ways in which we comprehend and interact with our surroundings. The artist's talk expands on the intersection of still and moving images, focusing on the body, the landscape, the climate and economic crisis, colonialism, geopolitics and future ecologies.
The subsequent conversation embarks on the questions of what’s practically present and how we could use infrastructure as a tool for reading relations in the island’s environment. What are the contradictions found in Kallinikou’s work signifying urgencies on the Cyprus landscape? Through a diagnostic of the earth, traces of Kallinikou’s research and practice, and collaborating projects with Christodoulidou, reimagineinterpretive methods of analysis.

Stelios Kallinikou’s practice presents sequences of imagery that flow into interlaced dialogues, whilst examining different themes such as politics, colonialism, the environment, technology, spirituality, and the power of images. Through photography, video and sound, he constructs worlds at an introspective pace that act as speculative scenarios through which the intersections between territorial and ideological notions relating to land and the body - such as space/place and time/history - are explored. Kallinikou was a resident at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany (2018-2019), and he is the co-founder of Thkio Ppalies Project Space, based in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Marina Christodoulidou is an independent researcher and curator based between Cyprus and the Netherlands. Traversing curatorial formats, her practice emerges from critical, artist-led infrastructures and self-organized initiatives. Her projects often take the form of discursive exhibitions, writing, socially engaged practice and architecture. Marina's decolonial reading of Cyprus history act as a departure point for her research and approach. Interested in confabulating collective curatorial practice, she is currently part of the Curatorial Programme (2023) at de Appel in Amsterdam.
Marina has previously worked with the Cyprus Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale (2015-19) and co-curated the Anachoresis project which represented Cyprus at the Architecture Biennale (2021). Recent projects include hypersurfacing (2019) at NiMAC in Nicosia and The Broken Pitcher (2020-), an ongoing collaborative project that has been presented in public squares across Cyprus, at Thkio Ppalies, Nicosia; Beirut Art Center; GfZK, Leipzig, amongst other.
