Agustin Pérez Rubio – TOWARDS AN INVERTED MUSEUM
Born 1972, Valencia, Spain. Lives and works in Madrid.
Art historian, professor and curator Agustin Pérez Rubio has curated more than 170 exhibitions at museums, art centres and biennials, mainly in Europe and Latin America. Currently, as an independent curator, Pérez Rubio has resolved to rethink decoloniality, both in the field of museums and in relation to dissident sexual practices based on feminist and queer/cuir theory. Pérez Rubio is currently engaged in projects involving artists whose work creates political discourse on gender issues, such as the traveling European retrospective of Martin Wong (CA2M, Madrid; KW, Berlin; Candem Art Center, London and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam); a survey of women in abstract expressionism, Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940–70 (Whitechapel Gallery, London; Museum Van Gogh, Arles and Kunsthalle Bielefeld) and the first mid-career survey in Europe of Colombian artist Carlos Motta (MACBA, Barcelona [2024]). In 2024 he is curating the Spanish Pavillon at the Venice Biennial.
Pérez Rubio was curator (with María Berríos, Lisette Lagnado and Renata Cervetto) of the 11th Berlin Biennale (2020). Previously, he was curator of the Chilean Pavilion, 58th Venice Biennale (2019) for a project by artist Voluspa Jarpa. He was artistic director of the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) from 2014 to 2018, where he developed a socio-political programme dedicated to female Latin American artists. During this time, Pérez Rubio worked with Andrea Giunta on a new curatorial script for MALBA’s collection titled VERBOAMÉRICA (2016). In addition, he has programed solo shows for Diane Arbus, Alexander Apóstol, Jorge Macchi, Julio Le Parc, Carla Zaccagnini, Yoko Ono, Ximena Garrido-Lecca and Irene Kopelman, as well as the retrospective show for the collective General Idea at both MALBA (2016) and the Jumex Museum, Mexico City (2017). Previously, Pérez Rubio was chief curator and director of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), Spain (2003–2013), where he organised monographic exhibitions for artists such as Harun Farocki, Elmgreen and Dragset, Pierre Huyghe, Dora García, Julie Mehretu, Akram Zaatari, Pipilotti Rist, Lara Almárcegui, Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAA, Rosa Barba, Georges Adéagbo, Ugo Rondinone and Azucena Vieites, among others. He has curated solo shows by artists such as Sophie Calle, Nestor Sanmiguel Diest, Carlos Garaicoa, Rosângela Rennó and SUPERFLEX as well as many group shows related thematically to gender, linguistics, architecture and the sociopolitical contexts of art.
Pérez Rubio was a board member of the Istanbul Biennial (2017–2022), and currently serves on the board of CIMAM (2017–2023) and the Critical Friends board of the Schwules Museum, Berlin (2021–2023). He has been on several curatorial boards for the acquisition of works for collections such as Tate Modern, Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, MALBA, Frac- Piemonte and MUSAC. Pérez Rubio was a guest professor at the Institut für Kunst im Kontext, Universität der Künste Berlin (2019–2020).

Curatorial Strategies for dismantling the colonial museum machinery

As historian, researcher and curator, Agustin Pérez Rubio will give a talk where he will focus on how the discourse of The Enlightenment -with rise of scientific positivism- and the Modernity, were perpetuators of the colonial regime in relation to economy, culture and art. Projecting the notion of the Museum -starting as cabinets of curiosities-, as machinery and showcase for it. Under disciplines of extractivist knowledge and a construction machinery per se, of a racist discourse that continue objectifying cultures coming from the Global South.
In the search for strategies that will help us to eliminate the colonial roots where the museum is anchored, Perez Rubio will talk about different projects that he curated in relation to this idea, giving some light into the diverse ways on how artists and curators can work together to dismantle these notions through research-based work and situated knowledge. Through projects as VERBOAMERICA (MALBA, 2016); Altered Views by Voluspa Jarpa (Chilean Pavilion 58th Venice Biennale, 2019), Inverted Museum (Gropius Bau as part of 11th Berlin Biennale, 2020), or Good Government by Spanish-Peruvian artist Sandra Gamarra Heshiki (Sala Alcalá- CGAC 2011-22), he will try to relate the modes of construction of the hegemonic Eurocentric and colonial gaze in the European context as well as in colonies Latin America. To do so, it will deal in more detail about what this colonial gaze meant for the future of current globalization, understood as part of the colonial capitalism of Europe, which has remained until today – following the words and theories of thinkers from the group Modernity/Coloniality as Anibal Quijano, Walter Mignolo, and Rita Regato among others.
