- Participatory Research 2 This course introduces methodological frameworks for conducting art-based participatory research with non-artist communities. We employ artistic practice as a form of research which actively makes meaning/knowledge through art and explores the material, performative, ephemeral, habitual and non-conceptual aspects of what it is to be human (Inclusive Arts Practice and Research: A Critical Manifesto, 2015). In the winter semester, we will also find a chance to discuss how collaborative art-making encourages participation and shared power in development decisions among ordinary people regarding urban planning policies and processes. This is because comprehensive planning has the potential to change some development rules and processes that lead to inequitable outcomes. Target student: This interdisciplinary program is suitable for all students who want to work in team and develop collaborative praxis skills through community-engaged art research. Work Process: Short overview of art-based participatory research theories, site Identification, establishing collaborative partnerships with local stakeholders, site analysis through visiting places and community dialogue, co-creating participative approach through artistic practices, sharing your art-making experiences with classmates etc. The focus of this course is collaborative creative process over final outcomes, emphasizing the transformative potential of artistic co-creation as both research methodology and social practice.
