- Einfuehrung: Dekoloniales Denken - Perspektiven in Mode und Design Colonialism is over, but the colonial continuities are still present. Colonial reappraisal is still in its infancy and is increasingly demanding clarification following the Black Lives Matter movement. In the cultural landscape, there is an increasing presence of the topic, while the media, textile, and clothing industries are still reluctant. In the fashion and design scene, approaches with a decolonial orientation have developed in recent years that critically scrutinize the fashion and design system. A booming fashion scene from Africa and its diaspora is gaining more and more international attention, breaking stereotypes, breaking down cliches, and challenging narratives. What role do fashion and design aesthetics from Africa play in decolonization? What is a colonial reappraisal and how does it work? What does decolonization mean in the context of fashion and design? What historical colonial references are there in fashion and design? What exactly does this have to do with post-colonialism and what does the term mean? What effects do colonial continuities and racism have on our thinking? We want to address these core questions in the summer semester and will examine selected platforms for this purpose. All disciplines involved in the process of fashion and design production, presentation, and reflection will be scrutinized, both on an individual and institutional level, with the lecturer contributing a wide range of experiences from her projects to this critical discussion. The seminar introduces the topic of decolonial thinking in fashion and design, focusing on concepts, project examples, and perspectives, combined with a rich exchange of readings, photography, and film.
