Fine Arts Lecture Series – Hanna Nitsch: Losing Ground

‘Losing Ground’ explores the question of how artistic practice emerges when it is not guided by certainties, predictable outcomes or a pre-established form. Drawing on more than twenty years of artistic work, Hanna Nitsch uses selected drawings, photographs, installations and performative projects to reflect on a sense of disorientation, change and the conscious departure from familiar ways of thinking and working. The lecture views the various groups of works not as fixed positions, but as stages in a continuous process of exploration, in which content, materials, perception and working processes constantly interact in new ways. The focus is on the question of what forms of insight an artistic practice can generate when it embraces detours, contingency and the productive power of the unpredictable.
