There is one country you will probably search for in vain on any list of ultimate travel destinations: Moldova, better known as Moldavia. With a population of around four million and an area of less than 34,000 km2, the figures are roughly comparable to the population of Berlin spread over the size of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. While tourist marketing with merchandise ranging from key rings to T-shirts with the ubiquitous slogan ‘I <3 Berlin / Paris / Venice / ...’ shows no sign of abating, souvenirs bearing the words ‘I <3 Moldova’ are likely to be considered rare gems outside the country's borders. As one of the youngest EU countries, it is one of the least visited regions in Europe.
As part of an excursion, students from the University of the Arts Bremen explored the urban and rural areas of this almost blind spot on the European map, away from the central sights. The thirteen photographic series that resulted focus on the unspectacular and everyday. Instead of depicting what shapes the public perception of a country, they express its quieter facets. They are about encounters, hospitality, and the realities of work and life. The exhibition ‘I <3 Molvoda’ runs from 11 December to 27 February 2026 in the gallery in the foyer of the Bremen Chamber of Employees.
A collaboration between the University of the Arts Bremen, the Bremen Chamber of Employees and Freelens, supported by the West-East Encounters Foundation.
