‘Whenever Brad Mehldau is in Paris, he meets up with Baptiste to listen to him and exchange ideas.’

Rémi Vignolo recounts this. Yet this single sentence says almost everything about the pianist Baptiste Trotignon, who has long been celebrated internationally.

On the recommendation of Albert Mangelsdorff, the young bassist Markus Schieferdecker joins the Franco-German Jazz Ensemble, where he gets to know Baptiste. This is followed by several years of performing together, with concerts in Nice, Paris, Nancy, Berlin, Frankfurt and on La Réunion.

In Nancy, the ensemble shared the festival programme with accordionist Richard Galliano’s trio. Their bassist, Jean-François Jenny-Clark – who had also played with Keith Jarrett – had fallen ill. Rémi Vignolo stepped in for him. It was to be Rémi’s last performance as a bassist for a long time. He had sold his instrument – he wanted to become a drummer. And this despite the fact that he was already playing in Michel Legrand’s band (composer of ‘Windmills of Your Mind’). Eight years later, he picks up the bass again. ‘It was like riding a bike.’ The circle is complete in Saarbrücken, in the band of SAP software pioneer August-Wilhelm Scheer. There, Markus Schieferdecker meets Rémi again, who is now playing with Baptiste.

On 12 January 2027, this Franco-German collaboration will be back on stage.

Markus Schieferdecker is a professor of jazz double bass and electric bass and heads the jazz department at the HfK Bremen. On 12 and 13 January 2027, the band will be holding a short seminar for all students at the HfK.
