HfK Jazzclub | Hammond sings the Blues

University of the Arts Bremen | Musikkeller/Mensa 13

When the elderly Hammond B3 organ was celebrated on its latest birthday, a long-cherished wish of Klaus Möckelmann came true: to finally play his favourite instrumentals again with a classic line-up. In Fred Drobnjak (guitar) and Jonathan Frach (drums), he found the perfect fellow musicians to open the session at the HfK Jazzclub on Tuesday, 21 January.

Pianist and Hammond B3 player Klaus Möckelmann has been touring for years with various blues, soul and funk bands. He has a particular passion for Hammond B3 instrumentals. His long-held wish to form an instrumental organ trio again, playing his favourite pieces, came true in 2024. During a performance with Fred Drobnjak (guitar), Jonathan Frach (drums) stepped in as a stand-in. The groove clicked straight away, and it was quickly decided to continue working in this line-up.

The programme features their shared, cross-generational love for diverse grooves such as funk, shuffle, swing and blues, as well as the sometimes underrated great jazz classics. At the heart of it all is the blues, which runs through the programme in all manner of variations, completely undogmatically.

The programme features well-known classics by Jimmy Smith, Jack MC Dough, Groove Holmes, Bruce Cats and Ronny Earl, as well as more recent jazz-fusion-inspired blues arrangements by Ronny Jordan and Bob Berg, a few numbers from the ‘Great American Songbook’, and some original compositions.

The "hfk jazzclub" is the venue for contemporary jazz in Bremen. Concerts and sessions with musicians from the university and local and national musicians take place every Tuesday of the semester at 8 pm in the basement vault of the University of Music. Passionate jamming takes place here, or student tryout programmes are presented. Semester projects by the Rehearsal Band and themed concert programmes are also on offer. In short: a think tank for jazz and a meeting place for Bremen's jazz scene.
