HfK Jazzclub: Jihye Kim Trio
The Jihye Kim Trio is a modern jazz trio led by pianist Jihye Kim. The three musicians met last year whilst working on the ‘Korean Children’s Songs Medley’ project and played together for the first time. They are now reuniting for the current concert series. Drawing on their diverse musical experiences, they have developed a modern, relaxed and mellow sound that defines the unique character of the Jihye Kim Trio.
The pianist and bandleader, Jihye Kim, who is originally from South Korea, has been studying jazz piano at the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK Bremen) since 2024. After studying classical composition and completing specialist training in film music, she worked for many years as a composer and arranger across various musical genres. It was through a concert by the Korean jazz pianist Lee Gun-min that she discovered a new musical world and began to immerse herself in jazz piano.
Martin Gruet studied classical double bass in Paris and Dublin, after which he played with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. He furthered his training at jazz workshops, including those led by double bassists Hein van der Geyn and Ron Carter. Having made Bremen his home since 2010, he tours Ireland, the UK, France and Germany and is involved in a wide variety of projects. He has performed with, amongst others, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra and Rebekka Bakken.
Frederik Palupski studied jazz drums at the HfK Bremen. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Hamburg. His musical experience ranges from classical percussion ensembles to experimental electronic music and traditional jazz. He is involved in various projects such as My amp just broken, Pinnowation, Weaken and Northern Lights Trio. In these projects, he works not only as a drummer but also on the keyboards, as well as a composer, arranger and sound engineer. His diverse musical work and his interest in different soundscapes lend the trio added dynamism and vitality.
