HfK Jazzclub: Tommy Niemands Hot Five

University of the Arts Bremen | Musikkeller/Mensa 13

Thomas Niemand, a thoroughbred and now full-time musician and singer, came into contact with his instrument, the trumpet, at an early age: at the age of 12, he learned to play in a church choir in Lübeck. As a regular visitor to the city's jazz club as a teenager, his technical skills soon merged with his true musical passion – traditional jazz. He gained experience with the ‘old hands’ of the scene and recorded his first record with Dr. Jazz Companie at the age of 17. ‘Traditional jazz is a music that knows an infinite number of beautiful melodies, gives every musician a lot of freedom and carries the audience along with it,’ says Thomas Niemand. Since then, he has played in many North German jazz bands and was the leader of his own band, Nobody's Sweethearts, for twelve years. He has accompanied singers such as Lillian Boutté, Janice Harrington, Nathalie Kollo and Denise Gordon and performed at international jazz festivals such as the Dresden Dixieland Festival, Jazz in Duketown in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, the Ascona Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Danish events Riverboat Jazz Silkeborg and Femo Jazz Festival. Thomas Niemand has been a member of the Traditional Old Merry Tale Jazzband since 2013.
Thomas Niemand is characterised by his full tone, stylish playing, spontaneity and infectious enthusiasm. Louis Armstrong, Harry Edison (Count Basie Orchestra), Clark Terry (Count Basie and Duke Ellington) – these trumpeters have influenced the trained insurance broker, who turned his hobby into a full-time profession in 2013. "In recent years, I have had the honour of playing with internationally renowned musicians who were my role models at the beginning of my musical career: Ole Fessor Lindgreen, Andy Cooper, Mike Cotton and Johnny Barnes.

Thomas Niemand is accompanied by the ‘hard core’ of the Swingin' Fireballs from Bremen:

Volker Bruder (sax)
Joachim Refardt (piano)
Stefan Reich (bass)
Friedemann Bartels (drums)

The "hfk jazzclub" is the venue for contemporary jazz in Bremen. Concerts and sessions with musicians from the university and local and national musicians take place every Tuesday of the semester at 9 pm in the basement vault of the University of Music. Passionate jamming takes place here, or student tryout programmes are presented. Semester projects by the Rehearsal Band and themed concert programmes are also on offer. In short: a think tank for jazz and a meeting place for Bremen's jazz scene.
