About Ionel Ungureanu
Ionel Ungureanu is currently principal violist with the MDR Symphony Orchestra and lecturer in viola at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, where he has been teaching his own major class in viola since 2024. He is a sought-after principal violist in leading orchestras in Germany and is equally passionate about chamber music with up-and-coming musicians of his generation. His main passion is teaching: with methodological precision, creativity and dedication, he imparts his diverse experience to students and inspires them to develop an open, holistic understanding of music.
His artistic profile extends far beyond the classical framework of an instrumentalist: in addition to his intensive orchestral and teaching activities, he composes and arranges music across genres and eras, which is often performed by his Balkan/jazz/contemporary ensemble Borsch4Breakfast. His greatest successes include third prize and the prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work at the 2023 ARD Music Competition in the viola category, as well as his debut as a soloist at the Berlin Philharmonic with the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin.
Ungureanu was born in 1995 into a family of musicians and received his first violin lessons from his parents at the age of four. After studying with Ute Hasenauer and Marco Rizzi in Cologne and Mannheim, he initially studied violin with Nachum Erlich. During this time, he developed a fascination for composition, early music, jazz, string quartets and improvisation, which had a lasting influence on his musical thinking. He eventually discovered the viola as his primary instrument of expression and continued his training with Roland Glassl. He also received important artistic inspiration in masterclasses with Hartmut Rohde, Nobuko Imai and Atar Arad. Ungureanu plays a viola by Wolfgang Scharff from Wolfratshausen.
