The HfK Bremen is looking for a designer to develop and design the New Year's greeting card

The HfK Bremen is looking for a designer to develop and design the New Year's greeting card 2024 in consultation with the Rectorate and Department 1. The New Year's card should appeal to a broad target audience. The focus of this card is not on Christmas, but rather on conveying greetings and wishes for the New Year. We ask for a creative approach to the possibility space of the turn of the year; own concepts and thoughts on the social, political and artistic core message to be conveyed with the New Year's card are wel-come.

An important aspect of the design is the digital transmission of the New Year's card 2024, which means a translation of the analogue New Year's card for the web and social media channels, especially Instagram. However, the focus is on the print version in its analogue quality.

  • German/English greeting form, the length of which is based on this template:
    Die Hochschule für Künste Bremen wünscht schöne Feiertage und einen guten Start in das neue Jahr 2024.
    Season’s Greetings and best wishes for a good new year 2024 from the University of the Arts Bremen. (The submission of a text proposal is considered positive, but is not mandatory)
  • Space for a handwritten signature, no white space obliging to a handwritten message / white space should not appear empty.
    Partial edition with pre-printed signatures of Rector and Chancellor
    (signatures supplied)
  • Dispatch in standard envelopes (up to max. postage 0.85€) must be possible.
    (Suggestions for envelopes can be made)
  • Use of HfK logo on the card (will be supplied)
  • Use of hfk-bremen.de and @hfkbremen
  • Circulation around 1000 pieces (in clarification)
  • New Year's card ready for dispatch incl. 1 draft and 3 proofreading passes.
  • digital translation (use of website; social media: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, email signature)
  • Connection between analogue and digital
  • Partial communication with printer

Submission of portfolio and idea sketch

Send your design for the New Year's card and your portfolio or three work samples/selected works as a PDF and your idea sketch/design for the New Year's card to pressestelle@hfk-bremen.de by Sunday, 10 Septem-ber 2023, 23:59 (max. 10 pages).

Selection by jury and briefing

On 18/19 September, a jury will select the winners.
The ranking is as follows: 
1st place: 800 euros prize money 
2nd place: 400 euros prize money
3rd place: 200 Euro prize money

Completion and submission

On Wednesday, 1 November 2023, the final artwork of the New Year's card will be completed and the print files handed over to Unit 1. On Wednesday, 15 November, all other media (web and social media) will be handed over to Unit 1. The printing costs will be borne by the HfK.

Timetable

10. September 2023 until 11:59 pm – Closing date for the competition: Draft New Year's card and portfolio or three samples of work
18./19. September 2023 – Jury meeting
25. September 2023 – Announcement of winners
26. September until 27. October 2023 – Design phase including correction loops and approval
1. November 2023 – Delivery of files for printing
15. November 2023 – Delivery of digital formats
2.–15. November 2023 – Production 
22. November 2022 – Delivery of New Year's cards at Speicher XI 8

What else do you need to know and what are the requirements for a successful application?

  • All students and alumni of the HfK Bremen can take part, individually or as a group (the prize money is awarded per concept, regardless of the number of students in a group).
  • The jury members consist of expert professors and one representative each from the AStA, Department 1 (Press & Public Relations), the Rectorate and the Deans' Offices.
  • No third-party materials that infringe copyrights or intellectual property rights may be used in the preparation of the New Year's card.
  • The designs must comply with the corporate design of the HfK Bremen (use of the two-part HfK logo according to the manual. See: https://www.hfk-bremen.de/t/marketing-und-öffentlichkeitsarbeit/n/logo).
  • The call for entries offers the greatest possible freedom in the design of the New Year's card.
  • There is no predefined motto/narrative for the New Year's card. You are free to develop your own motto/narrative.
