"As the name suggests, two must exert themselves so that both may advance." (Original: "Wie der Name schon sagt, müssen zwei sich anstrengen, damit beide vorwärts kommen. ")

Tandem means communication between two native speakers of different origins who serve their partner to learn the other language. The partners determine the topics of their exchange themselves. Basically, tandem is a form of autonomous learning that does not replace language courses but builds on them or complements them in a meaningful way. The learner acts according to individual language needs and personal interests and is put in a position to take more responsibility for his/her own learning progress.
