STATES OF LONGING explores longing in all its facets – as a fleeting feeling, as a moment between visibility and invisibility, desire and restraint. The participating artists approach this elusive state in an open, transmedia process and leave room for individual and collective forms of expression. The exhibition itself becomes a dynamic space of intimacy and reflection in which longings unfold, overlap and transform. Accompanied by musical interventions, it opens up a dialog between places, experiences and emotions - between Vienna and Bremen, between proximity and distance.
The exhibition format class swap – out now invites young artists to develop cross-regional connections during their studies. The format has been on the program since 2024 and creates a space in which joint artistic projects can be realized beyond internal university connections. The concept is based on the idea of exchange: students from Bremen University of the Arts propose an exchange class from another art academy in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Together, the participating classes develop an exhibition project that forms the basis for the collaboration. The exhibition offers space for a maximum of ten participants to present their artistic ideas at Galerie Mitte. In addition to artistic practice, the focus is also on examining the process of developing an exhibition within an institutional framework. Class swap – out now 2025 invites students to look beyond their own academic context, build networks and work together to create an exhibition that thrives on the diversity of discursive perspectives and ideas.
