Früher wurde Illustration in Kirchen als Mittel verwendet, um Bibeltexte und die christliche Mythologie jenen zu vermitteln, die nicht lesen konnten. Daher bestand die Aufgabe des Illustrators, in den meisten Fällen des Malers, darin, die zentralen und ikonischen Elemente auszuwählen, die als Zusammenfassung der Texte dienen und dem Betrachter helfen konnten, sich an die gesamte Geschichte zu erinnern.
Im Illustrationskurs des Sommersemesters widmen wir uns der Mythologie, die in Nordeuropa vor der Ausbreitung des Christentums vorherrschte: der nordischen Mythologie. Einer der wichtigsten Texte dieser Tradition ist die Völuspá, eine Erzählung über die Entstehung und den Untergang der Welt in einem zyklischen Verlauf. Der Text existiert in mehreren Varianten; die bekannteste findet sich in der Edda von Snorri Sturluson, die um 1220 auf Island verfasst wurde.
Im Verlauf des Kurses, der sowohl Block A als auch Block B umfasst, erstellt jede*r Studierende neun Illustrationen zur Völuspá.

Die Arbeit umfasst fünf Doppelseiten sowie vier weniger komplexe Illustrationen, etwa Halbseitenbilder oder Vignetten.

In earlier times, illustration was used in churches as a way of conveying biblical texts and Christian mythology to those who could not read. It was therefore the task of the illustrator, in most cases the painter, to select the most central and iconic elements that could summarize the texts and help the viewer remember the entire story.
During the summer semester illustration course we will devote ourselves to the mythology that prevailed in Northern Europe before the spread of Christianity: Norse mythology. One of the most important texts we know from this mythology is the Völuspá, a narrative describing how the world is created and how it ends, in a cyclical process. The text exists in several versions, the most well-known being preserved in Snorri Sturluson’s Edda, written in Iceland around 1220.
During the course, which includes both Block A and Block B, each student will produce nine illustrations for the Völuspá.
