Ever since the first drawings and paintings were created on Paleolithic cave walls, flickering in torchlight, the shadow—the interplay of light and darkness—has been central to the development of both our visual language and culture. The shadow is also the theme of the first part of Illustration Générale this term. Each student is tasked with creating a story in text and image, using the shadow as their starting point. The specific approach to the theme is up to each individual. Unlike the usual working process, students are not expected to prepare a synopsis or storyboard in advance but are instead encouraged to improvise their narrative as they work. Part 1 will serve as the foundation for Block B. Students who wish to participate in Block A are therefore advised to also enroll in Block B. The course is open to MA students. The course is supervised by Tei Um (21.4-7.5) and Professor Samuel Nyholm (7.5-28.5).

In Part 2, we will use our visual narratives from Part 1 to create new stories by applying collage and cut-up techniques to the existing material, both in text and image. We begin with a workshop featuring all illustration instructors. It is a world premiere, something that has never happened before, and no one can foresee what the consequences will be. To participate in Part 2, you must first have completed Part 1, The Shadow. The course is open to MA students. The course is supervised by Karl Nawrot (2.6-4.6, 30.6-9.7), Tei Um (2.6-4.6), and Professor Samuel Nyholm (2.6-25.6).
