Historical Bassoon

The education in Historical Bassoon at the HfK is focussed on developing a comprehensive understanding of the bassoon repertoire from its origins to the 18th century. Starting with the dulcian, basic techniques are developed that can be applied to subsequent instruments. Technical skills, knowledge of reed making, improvisation skills, and familiarity with performance practices and historical contexts are taught, as well as control of the reed, scales, and arpeggios.

The training promotes flexibility, adaptability, independence and the ability to prepare concert programmes and recordings. In addition to technical and stylistic studies, students gain an awareness of the specific sound and articulation possibilities of each instrument as well as the techniques of reed construction. Contemporary repertoire is also explored in collaboration with composers in order to explore the expressive potential of the instrument.
