Biography

Cristina Dorador Ortiz is a Chilean scientist, feminist, and activist. She has 20 years of experience in microbial ecology and specializes in the microbial ecology of extremophiles and extreme environments. This includes research on microbial diversity (bacteria, archaea) and the consequences of lithium mining (Salar de Atacama/Atacama Desert).

She is currently an associate professor in the Department of Biotechnology at the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Antofagasta, and has also worked as a researcher at the University of Kiel and the MPI Hamburg, among others. In Chile, she coordinates the Extreme Environment Network for the study of ecosystems in Chile's geographical extremes and has developed biotechnological tools to exploit the unique properties of some microbial highland communities, such as their resistance to ultraviolet radiation.
