We Dig It!
For more than three years, the third-party funded project We Dig It! has been working with teachers and students from both HfK departments to test innovative digital approaches and additions to study and teaching. Until the end of 2025, We Dig It! will continue to provide important impetus for development at the HfK.
The project's subtitle – Innovative teaching, learning, concert and exhibition spaces for art and music – already gives an indication of what We Dig It! is all about, namely exploring and experimenting with novel spatial concepts. Virtual and hybrid spaces are of particular interest here: for example, the digital platform HfK – Virtual Spaces was created as part of the project, based on a model of Speicher XI in Bremen's Überseestadt. In the HfK – Virtual Spaces, several real rooms of the university have been digitally replicated, enabling new exhibition formats with digital exhibits.
Another hybrid spatial concept has been in place since March 2025 in the concert hall on Dechanatstraße: Financed by We Dig It!, a so-called ‘active acoustics’ system was installed there by Amadeus Acoustics. In conjunction with 16 microphones and 46 loudspeakers, a special processor generates various sound reflections that can optimise the acoustics of the concert hall or create artificial sound spaces. Musicians and audiences alike benefit from the new possibilities, as the new system can create different acoustic situations at the touch of a button.
At a higher level, the project also includes ‘digital professionalisation’, which has created needs-based offerings for students and teachers. In addition, open competitions were held during the project period, each focusing on a specific theme. Further sub-projects of We Dig It! are briefly presented below.
A We Dig It! YouTube channel has also recently been launched. It features concerts from a wide variety of genres, recorded in 3D audio and then optimised for binaural playback. Interdisciplinary concert performances and audiovisual productions from We Dig It! competitions and sub-projects can also be experienced there.
We Dig It! is being supported by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre.
