Music in Bremen’s historical centre

Located in Bremen’s city centre since 1991, the Faculty of Music is just a short walk from the town hall, market square and Roland statue in Bremen’s historical city centre, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004. The Faculty occupies a listed historical building, which has been lovingly restored in recent years and altered to meet the requirements of a modern music university.

Gebäude Dechanatstraße bei Nacht

The Faculty’s inspiring and creative learning environment features an extensive range of facilities, including a concert hall, chamber music hall, recording studio, electronic studio, jazz studio, modern practice rooms, a canteen, and spacious ensemble and tuition rooms, ensuring that students can reach their full potential. Its relatively compact size (approximately 450 students are enrolled at present) makes meeting students from other programmes, developing contacts, and initiating projects a breeze.

Numerous concerts staged each year by the Faculty of Music make it an important institution in Bremen’s vibrant cultural life. Students participating in our programmes enjoy countless opportunities to contribute to Bremen’s cultural scene and gather experience for their professional practice, including orchestral performances at Bremen’s famous »Glocke« concert hall, class and solo recitals in our own concert hall, organ and choral concerts in Bremen’s churches, and chamber music and ensemble performances at attractive venues across the city.

A warehouse of the arts

The historical Speicher XI warehouse complex in Bremen’s former harbour precinct – known locally as Überseestadt – is home to the Faculty of Fine Arts & Design. Situated in the heart of a unique landscape of quays, cranes, warehouses and silos, this listed structure underwent substantial modernisation prior to the University’s relocation and is well equipped to meet the demands of a modern art university. The building combines heritage architecture with state-of-the-art technology to ensure that students enjoy outstanding working conditions and a creative atmosphere. Speicher XI is home to a host of bright studios with high ceilings, spacious areas for sculptural work and modern workshops where highly qualified tutors help students master the intricacies of printing, bronze work, ceramics and pattern design as well as modern media, including video, audio, film, and digital technology. Other facilities available at Speicher XI include a canteen, children’s crèche and the student-operated »Café Lu«.
