Equal Opportunity
Needless to say, the Hochschule für Künste Bremen (University of the Arts Bremen, or HfK) offers equal opportunities and recognizes that the diversity of its student body enriches our institution. The university strives to adequately support different experiences, perspectives, skills, and abilities, so that they can benefit all involved.
To do so, the HfK aims to make it possible for everyone to fully take part in university life. Dismantling discrimination and appreciating diversity are crucial, intersecting issues that affect not only the way the university is structured but also daily life here.
Equality and the Advancement of Women
The HfK aims to achieve gender equality in all areas of the university.
Counseling and support for implementing the law that mandates the advancement of women and gender equality will be provided by university leadership, departments, committees, and representatives of interested parties, such as the Zentrale Frauenbeauftragten (Center for Women’s Affairs), the Zentrale Kommission für Frauenfragen (Central Commission for Women’s Affairs, or ZKFF), the Frauen- und Gleichstellungsbeauftragten für den Verwaltungs- und Technikbereich (Office for Women’s and Gender Equality in Administrative and Technological Areas) as well as the Stabstelle Chancengleichheit und Geschlechtergerechtigkeit (Executive Department for Equal Opportunity and Gender Equity).

Anti-Discrimination
The HfK believes that fair and anti-discriminatory interactions with each other are an important foundation for respectful cooperation among everyone associated with the university, from students to faculty, as well as in the areas of art, science and research, technology, and administration.
The university acknowledges that it is responsible for the appropriate handling of discrimination cases, as well as cases of (sexual) harassment and violence, and vows to staunchly investigate and take action against any kind of misconduct.
During its meeting on May 21, 2025, the university’s Academic Senate passed the Satzung zu Diversität sowie zum Schutz vor und Umgang mit Diskriminierung an der Hochschule für Künste Bremen (“Antidiskriminierungssatzung”) or the Bylaws for Diversity and Actions to Prevent and Handle Discrimination at the University of the Arts Bremen (anti-discrimination bylaws).
These bylaws serve to dismantle and prevent discrimination of any kind, while also regulating the way that complaints are dealt with in cases of violation. It also defines responsibilities, procedures, and possible sanctions in the event of incidents.
Balancing Studies, Work, and Caregiving
A variety of offices provide advice and support in balancing studies, work, and caregiving (childcare, caring for or supporting dependents).
At the university, students can turn to the Department 1 – Student and Academic Affairs and the Central Women's Representative to get information about their studies when they are a parent, pregnant, or have familial obligations such as caring for dependents. Counseling will be provided regarding the process of taking exams during maternity leaves and leaves of absence, as well as ways to compensate for disadvantages caused by familial duties and childcare; external help and support services are also available.
The Studierendenwerk Bremen offers extensive counseling for issues such as financing your studies, and can also answer questions for students with children.
Faculty can receive support through Department 3 – Human Resources and the Central Women's Representative. Administrative and tech support employees can get help with questions regarding work-life balance from Department 3, the Staff Council or the Women's Officer pursuant to the State Equal Opportunities Act (LGG). Issues in question might be, for example, parental and maternity leave, leave to care for dependents, flexible work models, remote work opportunities and the corresponding work agreements.
Inclusion
Students and employees who are differently abled or have a chronic illness are often faced with special challenges. The HfK would like to make it possible for everyone to take part in university life and thus supports inclusion in accordance with the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Gender Diversity
There are diverse genders, and this is the reality at the HfK, part of everyday life here. The goal is to offer everyone associated with the university, regardless of gender identity, a non-discriminatory experience in their studies or work, and to remove existing barriers.
